In partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Sports, Light for the World is investing in a comprehensive child eye health programme. This is crucial because about 80% of children’s learning in early life is through the sense of vision. It is therefore important to ensure that the visual system is not disrupted and if it is, that remedial interventions are done in a timely manner.

School teachers and health workers have been identified as strategic partners in the early identification of children with visual impairment. This manual has been developed to equip teachers and health workers with knowledge, attitudes and skills to identify and refer children with visual impairment and other eye ailments.

The manual is structured in a way that makes it easy for participants to appreciate the anatomy of the eye, simple screening tests for visual impairment and to understand some of the common eye diseases that affect children and how they can be prevented or treated.
